Wangtao Lu - A hybrid of boundary integral equation and mode matching for wave scattering in waveguides

Abstract: In this talk, we will introduce a hybrid method that combines the boundary integral equation (BIE) method and the numerical mode matching (NMM) method to study wave scattering in a locally perturbed closed waveguide in two dimensions. Wavefield away from the perturbation is expanded by the waveguide modes, yielding an accurate and effective transparent boundary condition to terminate the unbounded structure. We develop a high-accuracy BIE method to solve the resulting boundary value problem, based on an effective approach that can accurately match the BIE mesh and the NMM mesh together on the terminating boundary. We shall also show challenges and opportunities of this new method for wave problems in open waveguides, water-wave problems, etc.
